NBCUniversal is seeking an Apprentice Sign Writer with a strong background in graphic design and a focus on creating print-ready materials such as posters, floor graphics, prop packaging, dimensional lettering, and more. This position will require close collaboration with clients and internal stakeholders to understand project requirements and deliver high-quality printed materials within tight deadlines.  

What You'll Do 

Customer Service: 

  • Consult with clients to understand the scope of their project including:  

  • Being able to recognize the material requested and being able to suggest alternatives

  • Understanding the physical size of products and quantities

  • Understanding methods of fabrication

  • Recognizing the feasibility of completing the project within the timeline.  

  • Price orders and create estimates

  • Incorporate client feedback and revisions to refine designs and achieve desired outcomes

File Prep & Review:

  • Interpret and process digital files for sign production on a daily basis, breaking down each element for production

  • Review print proofs and make necessary adjustments to ensure print quality and accuracy

  • Ensure designs adhere to print specifications, including color profiles, resolution, and bleed requirements

Production/Fabrication:

  • Work on all aspects of sign & graphics production including digital printing, vinyl work, routing, laser cutting and overall sign fabrication

What You Have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design or related field, or equivalent combination of education and work experience 

  • 3+ years of experience in a large format graphics department working with Adobe Creative Suite, ONYX & Versaworks RIPs, color ICC profiling & matching, print & cut solutions, Sai EnRoute, and Epilog laser cutting software

  • 3+ years of experience working with industry-standard files such as JPEG, PNG, TIFF, PSD, EPS, AI, INDD, PDF, SVG, RAW, raster & vector work

  • 3+ years of experience preparing final artwork files for printing, including file setup, color management, and preflight checks

  • Familiarity with general layout, fonts & typesetting

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with clients, team members, and vendors

  • Creative flair, attention to detail, and a passion for delivering high-quality design solutions

  • Knowledge of maintenance and troubleshooting of large format printers and plotters

  • Experience operating various equipment including large format printers, CNC router, laser cutter, vinyl cutter, laminator, waterjet cutter, etc.

  • Knowledge of graphics storage and print servers is helpful

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a proactive and problem-solving mindset

This position is represented by Local 729 CBA & the starting rate for this occupational code is $39.97
