The intent of this job posting is to fill one regular full time position and establish an eligibility list which may be used to fill current and future, permanent and limited-term, vacancies for up to two (2) years.

We are posting this opportunity for a Cable Splicer/Electrician Advanced Apprentice along with a journey level Cable Splicer/Electrician. The department will be filling only one position at either level. If you are interested in also being considered for a journey Cable Splicer/Electrician, you will need to apply to that requisition separately.

RESUME REQUIREMENTS: This position requires your completion of at least the 36-month level of a 54-month formal recognized electrical apprenticeship program that includes splicing and terminating various medium and high voltage cable types, or equivalent experience as it relates to the essential job functions for this position. To be considered qualified, you must clearly demonstrate on your resume or cover letter that you meet this requirement.

Qualified candidates from this process may be invited to a written and/or performance examination, which will be held to determine levels of skill and ability.

Purpose

Under the guidance of journey-level Cable Splicer/ Electricians or other authorized persons, performs work involved with learning the installation, maintenance, repair, and removal of underground cables and other underground electrical equipment. Splices all types of underground cables within a full range of voltages, including but not limited to, fiber optic, communication, and low and high voltage power distribution cables.

Nature and Scope

This series is assigned to distribution services. This is the Apprentice-level class for which there is an advanced apprenticeship. The work performed in this class is distinguished from the Lineman/Woman in that the Cable Splicer/Electrician splices and terminates cables of various voltage ratings using tapes rather than preformed devices, requiring specialized skills.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Cable Splicer/Electrician Apprentice:

  • At the Apprentice level, incumbent is in a learning capacity and assists in the duties specified below for a Cable Splicer/Electrician. Incumbents are expected to complete a 36-month apprenticeship before eligible for the higher-level Advanced Apprentice class.

  • Cable Splicer/Electrician will perform these duties as a fully qualified and experienced journey level:

  • Installs, maintains, repairs, and removes high and low voltage underground cables and other underground electrical equipment.

  • Splices all types of underground cables within a full range of voltages, including but not limited to, fiber optic, communication, and low and high voltage power distribution cables.

  • Operates, installs, drays, maintains and repairs electrical equipment associated with underground cable work this ranges from cathodic and other protection systems, transformers, relays, switches, disconnects, switch boards, control systems, fire and smoke detection and control systems, ground fault protection systems, motors, and network protectors.

  • Works on or around energized high and low voltage equipment.

  • Operates equipment such as boom and bucket trucks, aerial equipment, pullers, and forklifts.

  • Reads and interprets written documentation such as maps, mechanical and electrical drawings and schematics, and equipment technical manuals.

Required Experience

  • Relevant work experience to provide the necessary knowledge and skills.

Required Licenses/Certificates

Must possess and maintain a valid California Drivers License and a satisfactory driving record not more than two moving violations in the last two years.

Knowledge Of

High and low voltage cable installation, splicing and terminating; Theory and operation of power transformers, circuit breakers, relays, fuses and limiters, and related electrical equipment; Basic electrical theory including mathematics and algebra, electrical terminology, electrical and mechanical drawings and schematics; hand/power tools and test equipment used in installation and repair of electrical equipment; appropriate use of English grammar in order to understand and comprehend instructions and communicate information.

Skills To

Comprehend and apply technical information in shop manuals and training texts; follow written and oral instructions for installation, maintenance, and repair of equipment; develop and maintain effective working relationships with all groups of individuals; complete forms, requisitions, reports, and document work performed; perform work at heights, below ground in vaults, manholes and other confined spaces, and use ladders in a safe manner; perform required math calculations, including algebra and trigonometry; distinguish colors; safely lift and carry 80 pounds and move heavy cylinders.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Progressively responsible experience in the installation, connection, repair and maintenance of electrical equipment used in Network and Underground high and low voltage distribution systems.

  • Progressively responsible experience and training splicing and terminating high, medium and low voltage power cables.

  • Experience equivalent to at least the 36-month level of a 54-month formal recognized electrical apprenticeship program.

Desirable License/Certificate

  • Must have the ability to acquire and maintain a Commercial Class A driver's license within 6 months of hire date.

On-site Work

This role will be an on-site role that will require being in person at one of SMUD's campuses daily to complete work tasks.
